26th February 2010, 19:00-20:45
Free event
Members of the Grand Union Orchestra were invited to play and illustrate the art of continuous exhalation, also known as circular breathing. The audience were invited to gain some insight into this amazing technique featuring live music and new software offering real time visualisations of the musicians' exhalations.
The Smell of the Crowd event now has a summary video showing highlights of what took place -

We were joined by Tony Haynes, (Composer/Director) and musicians Claude Deppa, Andy Grappy and Gerry Hunt to give a lively demonstration, discussion and performance about breathing out for extraordinarily long periods of time.
The audience were able to try it themselves in this highly participatory event.
What are the advantages in being able to breathe out in this way? Do our lungs get a shot at exchanging gases
into our blood or is there some other way of bypassing them completely? Can this technique help artistry?
All these questions and more were answered by the team
and the evening concluded with a fantastic
and unique improvisation with live circular breathed music
