WHAT IS DARK HERITAGE LONDON?

We’re looking for a home for Dark Heritage in London to establish it as a new national resource on 18th century transatlantic slavery in the UK. Dark Heritage London would enable all UK school children to participate in a new type of learning experience that is designed to deepen their understanding of 18th century transatlantic slavery. Complementary to exhibitions about slavery in museums and galleries, Dark Heritage London will be an opportunity for people to engage in a haptic and physically interactive experience about slavery within a3D sound world in a pitch black space.

Between 2004 and 2008 Dark Heritage successfully enabled more than 30,000 young people across the UK to explore 18th century transatlantic slave trade in a unique, stimulating and highly effective learning environment. We’re now looking to extend this experience.

A London home for Dark Heritage will enable these unique educational activities to be offered to schools to support the DCSF’s decision of 2007 that all children aged 11 to 14 will be required to study the nature and effects of the UK slave trade, resistance to it and its abolition. Dark Heritage London will be a new national resource for the UK.
